Our office, along with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the American Dental Association (ADA), and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), recommends establishing a “Dental Home” for your child by age one. Children with a dental home are more likely to receive appropriate preventive and routine oral health care throughout their development.
You can help make your child’s first dental visit enjoyable and positive. If your child is old enough, we encourage you to explain that the dentist and team will help keep their teeth healthy, explain procedures, and answer any questions they may have. In most cases, keeping the conversation simple and relaxed helps create a more comfortable experience.
We recommend avoiding words that may cause unnecessary fear or anxiety, such as “needle,” “shot,” “pull,” “drill,” or “hurt.” Our team uses gentle, child-friendly language to help children feel safe and at ease during their visit.
Parents are welcome to stay with their child during the initial examination. For future visits, we may encourage children to accompany our team independently, as this often helps build confidence and trust during treatment. However, you are always welcome to accompany your child if you prefer.
For the comfort, safety, and privacy of all patients, we ask that siblings or children not receiving treatment remain in the reception area with a supervising adult.
