What Is Considered a Dental Emergency?
Some dental problems need immediate attention, while others should still be evaluated as soon as possible. Common dental emergencies we treat in Central Maryland include:
- Severe toothaches or sudden dental pain
- Swelling, abscesses, or signs of infection
- Knocked-out teeth
- Chipped, cracked, fractured, or broken teeth
- Lost fillings, crowns, bridges, or veneers
- Broken dentures or partial dentures
- Injuries to the gums, lips, cheeks, or mouth
- Dental trauma caused by falls, accidents, or sports injuries
If you are experiencing pain, swelling, bleeding, or damage to a tooth or restoration, it is best to call Kidz & Family Dental Center as soon as possible.
What to Do During Common Dental Emergencies
Taking the right steps before your appointment can improve the chances of saving a tooth and reducing discomfort.
- Knocked-out tooth: Call our office immediately. Pick up the tooth by the crown, not the root. If needed, gently rinse it with water, but do not scrub it. Try to keep the tooth moist by placing it in milk or saliva until you get to our office. Quick action is critical.
- Broken, chipped, or cracked tooth: Rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress on the outside of your face to reduce swelling. Save any broken pieces if possible and bring them with you.
- Lost filling or crown: Keep the restoration if you can find it, and bring it to your appointment. Do not try to glue it back in place yourself. We will assess the area and recommend the best solution.
- Toothache: Gently brush and floss to remove any trapped food. Rinse with warm water or a mild saltwater solution. If pain continues, contact our office for an evaluation.
- Swelling or abscess: Swelling may be a sign of a serious infection and should be treated promptly. Call us right away so we can help you get the care you need.
- Broken denture or bridge: Save all pieces and bring them to your visit. In some cases, the appliance can be repaired, while other situations may require replacement.
